Complete one simple garden task now and watch ‘perfect tulips’ bloom in spring

Winter’s chill can often dampen the spirits of garden enthusiasts, with harsh winds and storms leaving our landscapes looking a bit forlorn.
However, there’s a silver lining. A gardening expert from TikTok, Ish (known by his handle gardening.with.ish), has some advice that promises to breathe life back into your garden. In his latest tutorial, Ish reveals that the time to plant tulips is now, and with a little preparation, your garden will be adorned with vibrant colors come spring.

Follow his straightforward instructions, and soon enough, your garden will be a dazzling array of tulips. First, ensure proper drainage, as tulips are not fond of soggy soil.

Planting tulips for next year is a breeze! In this beginner-friendly guide, you’ll learn how to plant tulip bulbs and prepare for an impressive spring bloom. A quick tip: always make sure the pointed side of the bulb faces upward when planting.

In his video, Ish demonstrates the process. “The soil I’m using here is just regular, multi-purpose compost,” he explains. “I’ll line the first two or three inches with it. You could add some grit for extra drainage, but I’ve found that basic compost works just fine.”

Once the compost layer is in place, Ish proceeds to plant the tulip bulbs. Many people wonder about the ideal depth for planting tulips. The general rule of thumb is to plant them at a depth about two to three times the height of the bulb. “I’ll bury this about three or four inches below the soil,” he says, lining up the bulbs at the bottom of the pot.

He shifts the camera to show the ideal spacing for the bulbs, stressing the importance of ensuring they don’t touch each other or the sides of the pot. By following Ish’s method, you’re guaranteed a stunning display of flowers. The final step is to cover the bulbs with another layer of compost.

Before moving the pot, Ish recommends giving it a thorough watering. While tulips are relatively low-maintenance, they do require occasional watering throughout winter. This ensures healthy growth without over-saturating the bulbs.

He adds an important tip: keep the bulbs away from the pot’s edge to prevent frost damage, making this method nearly foolproof.
Ish also emphasizes that the pointed end of the bulb should face up, which helps the tulips grow to their full potential.

Experts generally suggest planting tulips in October or November for the best results. While planting can still be successful through December or even January, earlier is always better for a vibrant spring bloom.
